Gmail and Yahoo are introducing new email sender requirements that combat brand spoofing and scam emails.

Wondering what this means for your business? A few technical tweaks that, for the uninitiated, would go over one’s head.

Lucky for you, we’ve done the grind and are now experts (*self-proclaimed) at understanding exactly what’s required, when they’re required, and how it all works.

Who's Affected?

You. Well, everyone.

But if you're a heavy hitter sending emails weekly, pay extra attention. Failing to meet these requirements might land your emails in the no-man's-land of deliverability issues.

Google has said that they will begin enforcing the new requirements from February 1 this year, with a likely deadline being February 22nd.

Yahoo has yet to specify exact dates beyond Q1 of 2024. Regardless, it's happening.

Here’s our guide to unravelling what these changes mean for your business.

Getting Your Account in Gear: A Handy Checklist
  • Set Up Your Branded Sending Domain:

Branded sending domains boost control and ditch the "via klaviyomail.com" tag. A must for bulk senders, but brace yourself for a gentle warm-up period after activation.

  • DMARC Policy: Guarding Your Domain

Set up DMARC authentication in your DNS provider. If you’re new to this, check out Klaviyo’s tips here.

  • Align Your "From" Address with Your Branded Domain

Your friendly "from" address (aka. who your emails look like they’re sent by) should match your branded domain's root domain for DMARC compliance.

Avoid using your sending subdomain!

*P1 Action Item: Double-check all friendly "from" addresses for alignment in flow emails and campaigns.

  • Bid Farewell to Gmail in Your "From" Address

This shouldn’t really apply to you if you’re an eCommerce business, but it’s handy to note.

Don't use Gmail or Yahoo addresses in your "from" field. Switch to a website domain you own for that professional touch. Don't have a domain? The time to invest is now: Inbox providers will block you altogether if you don’t.

  • Make Unsubscribing a Breeze

Every email must have a one-click unsubscribe link. But don't fret, Klaviyo's got your back!

They're adding a handy bit of code automatically to headers. Just review your templates to ensure clarity and accessibility.
